We have been focusing on radio work; news bulletins, wraps and packages.
Shock FM is our ” radio station” here at Falmouth – it’s completely fake but if it were live it would be a commercial station, so our bulletins have been very local in flavour and around 90 seconds long – it’s quite hard to get everything in.
Our packages, however, can be for either Shock or BBC Falmouth (again, fake).
Here are a selection of ones I have done so far:
Porthtowan Beach Clean
Produced for The Tremough Show. I went along to Porthtowan beach to take part in the beach clean organised by Surfers Against Sewage. Unfortunately I have the touch of death on all recording equipment and my MAudio died so my interview had to be a phono.
RNAS Culdrose Special
We went and played in the Harrier jets for a day all in the name of journalism. We have now moved on to news magazine shows and ours “The Tremough Show” had a Culdrose special.
Reporting Trauma
Our brief was to create a wrap in half an hour after interviewing 5 “witnesses” after a terrorist attack at Stamford Bridge. We, unfortunately, didn’t manage to weedle out the entire story from the security guard, but it was a crash course in what to do when we have to cover a traumatic event. It was really hard because obviously you have to weigh up the need to get the story with your conscience – you have to understand that some people won’t be in the right state of mind to give their informed consent and without it you can’t run the clip! Also, there is the huge question of taste and decency – what would your mum want to hear when eating her toast in the morning?
I only just finished this, it is very rushed and very boring – I didn’t use the best clip because I wasn’t sure if it was ethical.
State Opening of Parliament
We were given a 1400 deadline to produce a package on the State Opening of Parliament and the Queen’s speech. I finished with literally seconds to go – the speech only lasted 7 minutes but the whole razmataz didn’t finish til around 1200. Not the most refined of packages but at least it was finished.
World Aids Day
1st December is World Aids Day. I had hoped to go to an event organised to mark the occasion but there was nothing happening anywhere in the vicinity of TR11 – the closest thing was in Torquay, which was a little far without my own transport.
Remembrance Sunday
A foray into voxpops. I went to the remembrance service in Falmouth and asked people why they thought it was important to remember and why they came.
Falmouth Oyster Festival
My very first package. It started out as a wrap (cue, one piece of audio, out cue), and then we were told to make it into a package (2 or more clips).
